About the Artist

Thomas Nozkowski (American, b.1944) is an abstract painter, born in Teaneck, New Jersey. He studied at the Cooper Union Art School in New York, where he was influenced by both the Bauhaus and Abstract Expressionist movements. After graduating with a B.F.A. in 1967, Nozkowski began exhibiting in 1973, and had his first solo show in 1979. Characterized by bright colors and geometric shapes, Nozkowski’s small-scale paintings are left untitled to allow for a more personal interpretation of the work by the viewer.

 

Working primarily in oil, Nozkowski has also shown works on paper and prints, including recent shows with specifically paired drawings and paintings. With works included in the collections of major art institutions, such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., Nozkowski has also exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad.

 

Among the many grants and recognitions received throughout his career, Nozkowski has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and four awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Nozkowski also became a member of the National Academy of Design in 2007. He currently lives and works in New York City.
